How to Make Task Boxes

Task boxes have changed my entire teaching style.  They have been so helpful in promoting independence, saving me time, and meeting the many different needs of my learners.

But I get so many questions of how I set them up so I wanted to write it all down in a blog post for you!

Well first up you need the academic part of the task box, so click below for three free ones to save yourself some $$

 I like to get all of my supplies ready before I begin the prep.  Here are the supplies you will need to get started:

Printer: I use HP insta ink with regular computer paper. Another option is card stock, but sometimes you have to save money and regular computer paper has worked just fine for me.

Laminator:  I have tried so many different types of laminators and this Scotch one is the best for me. It has a loading tray with guiding tools so the laminating never gets wrinkled.

Laminating sheets: I like to go with the amazon brand of these to save money and they are still great quality!

Hook and Loop velcro: I always splurge and get the dots. It saves me so much time and many headaches.  These are more expensive, but for me, they are so worth it.

Photo box holder: Most of my task boxes come in sets of 16 different skills.  I do these so they store nicely in these photo case boxes.  Other options are pencil cases, baggies, or staple them into file folders!

Packing tape: I use this when taping on the covers so the boxes are easily labeled.

Finally you just need time.  I am not going to lie, it takes some time to prep all of these materials but once they are prepped- you are good to go!


Step one:  Print all the pages.  I like to do everything at once because I will use all of the tasks, but if you only want specific tasks- check out the table of contents and only print those pages!

Step two: laminate those pages. I personally turn on one of my favorite shows and just run things through.

Step three: add that velcro. I do this before I cut- I think it saves just a little bit of time, but time is precious.

Step four: Cut out the task boxes.  I do this step one task at a time to keep them organized.  When I finish, I put it in the box, close it and put it away. Be sure to put in all the moveable pieces as well.

Step five: Tape the covers and labels onto the boxes. This makes them easy to pull when you are planning!

Step six: Use them for years to come! Now that you have put in all that hard work, you can use them for years to come. Enjoy!
