How Choice Can Prevent Problem Behavior

By providing students with the power to make decisions within certain parameters, educators can foster a sense of autonomy and empowerment, leading to a reduction in behavior issues. The Power of Autonomy

Human beings, regardless of age, appreciate having a degree of control over their lives. This holds especially true for students who often find themselves navigating the structured environment of a classroom.  Some students crave this more than others, especially if they have a more challenging home life.

 When educators offer choices, they tap into students’ intrinsic motivation and desire for autonomy. By granting students the ability to make decisions about their learning, teachers acknowledge their individuality and unique preferences, which can contribute to a more positive classroom atmosphere. This will lead to less problem behaviors, will build the trust in the relationship, and makes the days more enjoyable for everyone.

Benefits of Offering Choices

1. Reduced Resistance: When students are presented with choices, they feel a sense of ownership over their decisions. This can lead to a decrease in resistance and pushback often observed when they are forced into specific tasks or activities.  This means no more power struggles! Can you imagine just how much less stress you would have on a day to day basis if you did not have to fight with power struggles?

2. Increased Engagement: Having a say in their learning can significantly boost students’ engagement levels. When they are invested in the choices they make, they become more active participants in their education. 

When students are more engaged, their academic scores ultimately increase.  Therefore, offering choices is only supporting your academic goals as well.

3. Enhanced Problem-Solving Skills: Making choices involves considering options, consequences, and personal preferences. This process naturally enhances students’ critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.

Implementing Choices in the Classroom

1. Structured Options: Provide students with a selection of structured choices related to their assignments or projects. For instance, allow them to choose between different topics, formats, or presentation methods. This way, students feel a sense of agency while still adhering to the learning objectives. 

It is key to note that the two options you offer should both be acceptable for you if the students chooses, and should not be between one choice and a punishment. 

For example, a choice would sound like “Do you want to use the red pen or the pencil today” It would not sound like “Do you want to do your work now or at recess?”

2. Routine Decision-Making: Incorporate choice-making into daily routines. Let students decide the order in which they tackle assignments or which learning station they start with. These small decisions can accumulate and contribute to a sense of control.

3. Collaborative Decision-Making: Encourage collaborative decision-making by involving students in shaping classroom rules or choosing group activities. This not only empowers students but also fosters a sense of community within the classroom.

4. Reflection and Feedback: After completing assignments, ask students to reflect on the choices they made and the outcomes. This reflective practice helps them understand the impact of their decisions and encourages continuous improvement.
