This Making Friends Mini Unit is a week-long unit that helps your students learn to how to make friends, how to keep those friendships strong, and how to work through disagreements.

This resource gives you everything you need to explicitly teach students how to become better friends in short, meaningful lessons your students will actually enjoy. Each day builds on the last, from teaching them how to join a game that is already in play to learning steps they need to take to keep their friendships strong.

Making Friends Mini Unit Outline

DAY ONE: What does it mean to be a friend?

• Social Narrative about Making Friends(incudes Google slides, color PDF, and BW take home story)

• Activity to help students understand that friendships are built over time

DAY TWO: How to Join Play

• Social Narrative about joining a game or activity that is already happening (incudes Google slides, color PDF, and BW take home story)
• Activity to role play joining play

• Self reflection checklist

DAY THREE: Friendship Bumps & Fixing Problems

• Activity to sort big and little friendship bumps
• Discussion on how to repair these bumps
• Classroom poster
• Worksheet

DAY FOUR: Friendship Fuel: Keeping Friendships Strong

• Social Narrative about adding fuel to your friendship to keep it strong (incudes Google slides, color PDF, and BW take home story)
• Worksheet to reflect on the fuel they already use
• Partner activity to practice listening
• Self reflection checklist

DAY FIVE: Building a Friendship Bridge

• Review how friendships are built one plank at a time
• Students practice their skills from the week in stations
• Reflection page for the week
