Whether it’s following directions they don’t like, disagreeing with a classmate, or hearing “no” from a teacher, respectful behavior can be challenging in the moment.
The good news? Respect is a skill that can be taught, learned and practiced so students know what respectful behavior looks and sounds like instead of simply being told to “be respectful.”
This Respect at School Mini Unit is a week-long unit that helps your students learn how to demonstrate respect through their words, actions, body, and choices.
Handling Disappointment Mini Unit Outline
DAY ONE: What is Respect?
- Discussion about what respect is and how to show it through words, actions and choices
- Social narrative about what respect actually is (includes Google slides, color PDF, and BW take home story)
- Pledge to Respect Worksheet that students can sign
- Activity to sort the ways we do or do not show respect
- Cut and paste worksheet where students can sort pictures that show respect and do not show respect
DAY TWO: Respecting Friends
- Review and discussion about how to show respect to friends and classmates during play and group activities
- Social narrative about respecting friends (incudes Google slides, color PDF, and BW take home story)
- Classroom posters
- Worksheet to write or draw about respecting friends
- Social narrative about respecting boundaries
- Sorting cards activity about respectful responses
DAY THREE: Respecting Adults
- Review and discussion about how to show respect to adults even when students disagree or are frustrated
- Social narrative about respecting adults at school (incudes Google slides, color PDF, and BW take home story)
- Flipbook that helps students practice respectful replacement phrases
DAY FOUR: Respect Looks Different
- Review and discussion of how respect can look a little different depending on whether you are interacting with a friend, adult or everyone
- Showing respect clip cards where students decide whether the respectful behavior is showing respect to a teacher, friend, or everyone
- Respect choice wheel that students can assemble and spin to practice how to use that respectful choice at school
DAY FIVE: Respect Repair
- Discussion about how repairing respect means taking responsibility and making things right when you make a mistake
- Repair choices anchor chart
- Activity with scenario cards where students can choose a repair choice based on the scenario
- Reflection worksheet
- Certificate for completion
